Glaive x Midwxst Boston
Rising stars Glaive and Midwxst performed their duo show in Boston on February 22nd. Both artists give off a small-town vibe trying to make it in this growingly internet-centric world. Coming up on Soundcloud and through off-industry ways, these kids remind me of the Brockhampton era or even the 2016 golden era of Soundcloud.
8 pm and the show at the Sinclair Music Hall had just begun. It was 8:05 and I was still looking for a parking spot - after a sketchy parking job I ran in the rain through dodgy alleyways to find the Cambridge venue. The show was sold out and the house was bumping! I knew I was at the right place the second I got there.
aldn opened for Midwxst which would be followed by Glaive, the headliner. The crowd was antsy in anticipation and on came Midwxst. As the 808s bounced through the speakers., the crowd immediately thrashed into a mosh. Midwxst fed on this energy and channeled it into an impressive performance, leaping with every beat’s drop across the stage. When he played the songs “No Smoke” and “Tic Tac Toe” the energy came to a peak. This was a particularly special performance for the 18-year-old as his parents had come to watch and appreciate his success from the balcony above. Shouting out his mom, in particular, was a heartwarming moment during the show.
But it was only just getting started as Glaive followed!
At only 17, the shaggy-haired artist has already begun to impress the music industry and impressed me just as well as he flashed through his setlist. His youth shined at the forefront throughout his performance as he jolted around the stage, his hair swaying as he bobbed in and out of the crowd’s frantic hands. I felt hypnotized by songs such as “dnd” and “astrid”, where his vocal talent was complemented impressively by the support of a live drummer and guitarist.
Coming up in this new hip-hop/hyperpop/digicore underground scene we can’t wait to see what's next for this group of friends. It finally feels like the world is getting back to normal and this new rise in music excites me. With other similar artists and circles such as Eric Doa and Marco Luka the future of the scene is exciting!
